Is success as simple as belief And failure finds you Through the wrong cocktail of chemical reactions Reality's reduced Boiled down to sin or psychosis Fate or free will Will karma save you now Is success as simple as belief And failure finds you

I want to be that guy in the video again Was it really nearly twenty years ago? He was still full of dreams, chasing those fantasies But look at him now, all he feels is old As the bands came and went, I lost many of my good friends And a new girlfriend is in the front row But I haven't made it after all these years And I'm only living out my fears But being on stage still fills me with hope Well, I'm not looking to be a big star I just want a chance to take it that far But do I really have to make my living in bars? What kind of living is in bars? The guys down the street and some kids from my old school Joined me in a rock-n-roll band We said you'll never see us sell out 'cause being rich is not what we're all about We'd rather eat shit and die than work for the Man But my dad looked at me and said, "Son, what actually do you plan to be? Think about money, not just having fun. This music thing is all good for keeping you busy while you're in school. But don't you know when you wake up that dreaming is done?" Well, I don't want to end up in a music store I'm not going to teach just to pretend that I don't want more 'Cause being on stage is my place for sure It only took once to know my place for sure Well, I want to be that guy in the video again Was it really nearly twenty years ago?

You spend hours and hours on end Putting all your love into them But I'm forgotten like a study in pen I wish I were one of your painted portrait girls Maybe I could be a still life work I promise then I wouldn't speak a single word And just for you I could be seen and not heard You could clean up my smudges with time Define my shape, sketch new lines You could soften my contours and pride So, I could be one of your painted portrait girls Maybe I could be a still life work I promise then I wouldn't speak a single word And just for you I could be seen and not heard I'd be immortalized under glaze Dynamic pose, expressive face You'd never want to look away And I could live on in your lines and swirls And I'd be a part of your world So, can I be one of your painted portrait girls Maybe I could be a still life work I promise then I wouldn't speak a single word And just for you I could be seen and not heard

Looking back over a lifetime's worth of work As I cobble the highlights together A culmination of Then's Becoming a masterpiece of Now So many faces and conversations With friends and foes Lovers and strangers Marking the growth of me Like a running tally on a doorframe Look, everybody, I'm already this tall Maybe now that we stand eye to eye I won't feel so small

about

Out in the snowy Appalachian foothills, I recorded this EP with experimental/noise musician Zack Kouns in January 2015 in Ironton, Ohio. Tracked mostly in one or two takes, he overdubbed additional instrumentation without having ever heard the songs before. "Seen and Not Heard" and "Inside Her" were also released as singles on comps in 2015 and 2016.
